With the publication of “Susan Angeline Collins: With a Hallelujah Heart,” which features the life of Upper Iowa University’s first Black student, author Janis Bennington Van Buren recently presented a copy of the book to UIU. Among those participating in the ceremony were (l-r) UIU President William R. Duffy II, UIU Archivist Janette Garcia, Jan (Shimek) Coonrod, husband of the author Jim Boyle, Van Buren, Jeff Shimek, Jim Shimek and Cheryl Peterson. The Shimeks and Peterson are great-grandchildren of Julie Graham Stepp, who helped care for Collins during the last years of her life.
