UIU awards Knight Scholarship to NFV graduates
Fayette, IA (12/08/2023) — Upper Iowa University (UIU) has awarded the Carlton W. Knight and Maxine B. Knight Endowed Scholarship to 2023 North Fayette Valley graduates, Ben Mabb and Makenna Grove.
Ben Mabb, the son of Daryl and Nicky Mabb, of Wadena, Iowa, is currently majoring in accounting and financial management and is a member of the UIU baseball team. While attending North Fayette Valley his extracurricular activities included football and baseball.
Makenna Grove, the daughter of Daryl and Marta Grove, of Fayette, Iowa, is currently majoring in elementary education with a reading endorsement at UIU. While attending North Fayette Valley she participated in volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and dance. Additional community involvement included 4-H Fayette Firecrackers, Veterans Day committee, swim team coach, lifeguarding, Park and Rec boys soccer coach and referee, and Pay it Forward program. At Upper Iowa she is currently involved in the Student Philanthropy Council, Education Club and Campus Recreation.
This endowed scholarship pays tribute to Carlton W. Knight and Maxine B. Knight, proprietors of the former Knight's Hardware, located on Fayette's main street from 1900-1965. The scholarship was created by Carlton and Maxine's son, Dr. Kip Knight, class of 1962, and his wife Eileen, and stipulates that the award shall be provided to financially assist deserving individuals from within the customer base or trade area served by the family-owned and operated business.
Preference is given to students who have participated in extracurricular activities, worked in the family business or family farm to support or enhance their family standard of living, and who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.
Mabb and Grove will be formally recognized during the UIU Honors & Awards Banquet set for April 13, 2024, on Fayette Campus.
