Upper Iowa University 'Freedom' education grant to benefit military families
Fayette, IA (09/18/2020) — For over a decade, Upper Iowa University (UIU) has successfully utilized tuition assistance at U.S. military locations in an effort to provide the nation's service members an affordable Education Built for Life. To further assist the entire military family in achieving their academic and career goals, UIU is announcing that a Military Family Freedom Grant is now available to eligible spouses and dependents of all active duty, reserve, and National Guard service members.
The UIU Military Family Freedom Grant extends the University's $250 per credit hour tuition rate for undergraduate courses to the spouses and dependents of active duty service members for undergraduate classes. UIU also offers annual Military Spouse Scholarships, a Patriot Grant for all veterans and active DOD card holders, and accepts tuition assistance, veteran's educational benefits, scholarships and Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts.
"UIU has long realized that due to deployments, field duty, and a constant change in home location, military spouses and dependents face many of the same education barriers as our service members," said UIU President William R. Duffy II, a retired lieutenant colonel who served 20 years as an active duty infantry officer in the U.S. Army. "As a proud member of the extended military family, we feel the Military Family Freedom Grant is another example of Upper Iowa University's commitment to best supporting all those who serve our country."
With more than 40 majors to choose from, Upper Iowa University offers a wide variety of educational opportunities tailored to fit the dynamic lifestyle of today's military personnel and their families at 21 education locations in the United States. Service members can combine any of the three UIU academic extension programs - self-paced, online and military learning center classrooms - to create a schedule that best fits their needs. The UIU Military and Veterans Service Center, located at UIU's main campus in Fayette, Iowa, provides assistance to military and veteran students and family members, regardless of location, in navigating admission, enrollment and financial aid processes.
A participating institution in the Principles of Excellence and Yellow Ribbon programs, UIU has been named a top Military-Friendly School or University by VIQTORY, Military Advanced Education and G.I. Jobs on multiple occasions. Online undergraduate and master's programs at UIU have also been ranked among the best online programs for veterans and service members by U.S. News & World Report.
"Upper Iowa University is proud to be one of the most proven military- and veteran-friendly universities in the country," said Brandy Branstetter, UIU director of military affairs/Midwest region. "With the addition of the Military Family Freedom Grant, UIU provides even more flexibility to our service member families to earn a degree. UIU continues to be accessible no matter where they are. Whether at home, at a military installation, in the field or out at sea, they have the opportunity to achieve a high-quality education when and where it's convenient for them."
