Of those, 111 scholarships were bestowed on UIU students attending classes in Fayette and another 15 were awarded to students who take courses through other UIU locations. Seven students from Upper Iowa University presented their research projects at the Iowa Academy of Science annual meeting in Mason City recently. Undergraduate research allows students to apply their scientific knowledge to an area of their interest while gaining relevant employment skills. The student projects were completed under the advisement of Dr. Jennifer Stoffel, Dr. Katherine McCarville and Dr. Aaron Haines. Poster or oral presentations were also given by Upper Iowa faculty Barb Ehlers, Dr. Katherine McCarville and Dr. Aaron Haines. A few local students attending Upper Iowa University were recently inducted into Alpha Chi, a member of the Association of College Honor societies, a group of 67 societies meeting rigorous standards regarding student membership and governance. Of those, 85 scholarships were bestowed on UIU students attending classes in Fayette and another 20 were awarded to students who take courses through other UIU locations. Several local recipients were selected for recognition by the UIU Honors and Awards Committee. UIU President Alan G. Walker presented the awards. "We thank our alumni, friends of the University, and corporate sponsors whose donations make these awards possible," Walker told the honorees and their guests. Upper Iowa University recently held its 26th annual Scholarships and Awards Recognition Banquet and awarded 144 scholarships to students across the University. Of those, 121 scholarships were bestowed on UIU students attending classes in Fayette and another 23 were awarded to students who take courses through other UIU locations. Recipients were selected by the UIU Honors and Awards Committee. UIU President Alan G. Walker presented the awards. "These scholarships are just one of the benefits of attending a private four-year college," Walker told the honorees and their guests. "Our alumni, friends of the University, and corporate sponsors have generously donated to make these awards possible in helping to alleviate the debt of these deserving students. We thank you for continuing to help make a difference year after year." Endowed scholarships have been set aside by donors to specifically create annual scholarship awards for UIU students. The scholarships included several that have been established by Fayette area organizations and individuals, including: the American Legion of Iowa Foundation Scholarship, the Dr. Louise P. Herring Scholarship, the Fayette Chamber Betterment Foundation Award, the Mary Kimball Scholarship, the Lew Churbuck Scholarship, and the Northeast Iowa Scholarship. Endowed scholarships are supplemented by the University's participation in the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). UIU Team Peacock has ridden on RAGBRAI for six consecutive years to raise money to increase student scholarship awards. Since 2005, Team Peacock has generated an overall total of more than $500,000 and is targeting a cumulative total of $1,000,000 this year.

More than 50 high school students from the area were honored recently during the 28th annual Northeast Iowa High School Art Show at Upper Iowa University. During the art show, 54 students from 12 schools won awards for their artwork in a juried exhibition at the Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery in the Edgar Fine Arts Center on the UIU campus. Nearly 150 students competed in the art show, which was judged by Karl Unnasch, an artist from Minnesota. The students were from, Clayton Ridge High School, Decorah High School, Independence Community High School MFL Mar Mac High School, New Hampton High School, , North Fayette High School, Oelwein High School, Postville High School, South Winneshiek High School, Starmont High School, Sumner-Fredericksburg High School,, and Waukon High School.
